I'm proud of the March issue

We have a great mix of hard-hitting news and positive stories about students. Breigh and Kevin's story on the soccer coach is the best story we've done in the two years I've been advising the paper. I'm particularly happy that we have a story that happened the previous day on the front page. The inside pages recognize a lot of students who might not have gotten recognition otherwise.

You have a lot to be proud of. Keep up the good work and remember to speak up to anyone who criticizes our choice of news stories. The newspaper's reason for being is to report news, not to make friends. We may criticize each other freely inside the classroom, but outside the classroom, we stick together. If anyone makes a snide remark, say, "That's the best we could do under the circumstances."

Great Opportunity for Girls on Saturday

The following is the text of an email I received. This is a wonderful group that does interesting activities.

We would like to extend an invitation to Hollywood High School girls to attend our Fiction Workshop next Saturday, February 19th from 11 am-4 pm. There is no cost and lunch will be provided. During this event, special guests, including YA author Cecil Castellucci, will be helping explore the genre.

About This Class

This course is designed for those students who desire experience in print journalism and an in-depth production of a newspaper. Students have the unique opportunity to create and publish a student-driven newspaper. Newspaper students practice the fundamentals of journalistic writing, photojournalism, graphic design and budget management. Students will also develop their abilities to work as a team as they produce the newspaper.
Researchers have found that both college and non-college-bound students benefit from taking journalism in high school. A study of college freshmen found that journalism experience correlated with higher efficacy in a beginning English class (Collins and Bissell, 2002). Even teachers report less burnout and higher job satisfaction from advising the school newspaper or broadcast class, according to a study by Reinardy, Maksl and Filak (2009). Numerous studies by Dvorak and his associates have shown a correlation between journalism students and higher test scores on college readiness tests and in higher grades in high school classes.
